Computer Science Education Week 2020

This week is Computer Science Education Week, running from 7 – 13 December 2020. During the week, students all over the world will be taking part in an ‘Hour of Code’ and learning a little about programming computers. This year, there will be thousands of events in over 180 countries.

Programming a computer means writing the code (instructions) that tells the computer what to do. This is often called coding. Users don’t see it, but coding is behind everything you see when you use a computer, tablet, or phone. From web pages to games to apps to robots, coding is everywhere.

Bring computer science to your school. Start with an Hour of Code!

With technology changing every industry on the planet, computing knowledge has become part of a well-rounded skill set. But fewer than half of all schools teach computer science! Good news is, we’re on our way to change this. If you heard about the Hour of Code last year, you might know it made history. 100 million students have now discovered how accessible and fun computer science can be by doing just one Hour of Code.

The Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics. Learn more at, try an hour yourself, or host an Hour of Code event to introduce others to the world of computing!

“The Hour of Code is designed to demystify code and show that computer science is not rocket science—anybody can learn the basics. Over 100 million students worldwide have tried an Hour of Code. The demand for relevant 21st-century computer science education crosses all borders and knows no boundaries.”

The U.S. Congress first created Computer Science Education Week in 2009 to remember Grace Hopper (born December 9, 1906), one of the women who played an important part in the early days of computers. Grace coined the term “bug” (an error in a program) after removing an actual moth from a computer in 1947.
