From 9 – 14 November 2020 is Maths Week England. This is a week-long celebration of all things maths, encouraging children to pursue maths by promoting a positive and inclusive approach. This is in order to allow children from all social backgrounds to access and enjoy the wonders of mathematics, which are many!

Schools and higher education establishments are encouraged to participate in fun maths activities with a focus on encouraging students to consider maths as a potential career option.

Last Year

In 2019, 210,785 people registered to take part across England. This year, the organisers are aiming to double that and have already had over 488,000 registrations. If you would like to join in, you are able to sign up here.

What are the aims of Maths Week?

The main aim of Maths Week England is to make maths accessible to all students, of all backgrounds. In order to meet this aim, universities and centres of higher education are encouraged to invite schools to visit and take part in fun maths-based activities. In so doing, it is hoped that those students who may not see maths as a viable option for them will be inspired to explore the subject further.

Another aim of the occasion is to help teachers with the planning of special, low-cost yet high-impact maths activities at their own schools.

Maths Week is a great chance to be creative with how to have fun teaching maths. There’s no prescriptive, one-size-fits-all approach here. Part of the joy of this occasion is that educators are empowered to inspire their own students!
