Data Protection Day 2021

Today is Data Protection Day. Observed internationally each year on 28 January, the purpose is to raise awareness as well as promote privacy and data protection best practices to businesses and individuals.

In the modern digital society in which we live, more of people´s personal data is being processed every single second than at any time before. This can be from searching and buying goods or services on the internet, travel or interactions with public authorities etc.

However, many people are unaware of how their personal information is being used, collected or shared and the potential risks. Data Protection Day aims to promote dialogue and empower individuals and companies to take action, as well as raise awareness of what can be done if they believe their rights have been breached.

Data Protection and Cyber security for Schools

Within schools, data protection is essential as they work with large amounts of personal data. As such, it is a sad fact that schools are prime targets for hackers. In fact, 83% of schools have experiences a cyber security incident.

Elementa has partnered with cyber security experts BEWICA. Their platform helps protect schools against some of the most common attacks through active monitoring and staff training.

Schools that sign up using the Elementa specific link will benefit from seven days free access to the BEWICA platform. Sign up at https://bewica.com/elementa

About Data Protection Day

26 April 2006 saw the Council of Europe launch Data Protection Day to be celebrated each year on 28 January, the date on which the Council of Europe’s data protection convention, known as “Convention 108”, was opened for signature.

On this date, governments, data protection bodies and other parties carry out activities to increase awareness about the rights to personal data protection and privacy. These may include campaigns targeting the general public, educational projects for teachers and students, open doors at data protection agencies and conferences.

Millions of people are unaware of and uninformed about how their personal information is being used, collected or shared in our digital society. Data Privacy Day aims to inspire dialogue and empower individuals and companies to take action.
