Tomorrow, September 12, 2020 is World First Aid Day, an annual campaign to highlight the importance of first aid training in saving lives and preventing injuries.
World First Aid Day was launched in 2000 by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement (IFRC). Worldwide, more than 100 societies of Red Cross and Red Crescent celebrate this day. Events are organised on the second Saturday of September each year to raise public awareness about how first aid can save lives.
The International Federation believes that first aid must be accessible to all people and should be an integral part of the development of societies. Everyone should know how to save a life and age should not be a barrier.
Why is World First Aid Day so important?
Any emergency treatment or medical assistance provided to an injured or unwell person counts as First Aid. Having knowledge of basic First Aid is incredibly important and can potentially be life-saving.
In everyday situations, First Aid could be as useful if accidentally falling down the stairs, or cutting yourself at home. But in a crisis situation, this could be as drastic as giving medical aid to people in areas hit by natural disasters, such as flooding and earthquakes.
Therefore, wherever you are in the world, First Aid is essential, making World First Aid Day an important global event.
