School Sports Day season is well and truly underway. Many of the partner Schools with whom Elementa work have their sports days in the next two weeks.

Physical education and sport have been shown to be important to the development of children and young people. There is proof that for children in primary school, sports day can enhance mental and physical development, as well as improve social skills and academic performance.

In recent years, there has been movement away from competitive sport, particularly within primary schools. According to an article in The Guardian (https://www.theguardian.com/education/shortcuts/2017/jul/09/are-non-competitive-sports-days-really-better-for-school-kids), many children at primary school participate in ‘non-competitive’ sports days where “everyone joins in via a team-focused event where individuals are not singled out”. Opinion is very much divided on the merits of a ‘non-competitive’ sports day, many believing it doesn’t teach children about losing as well as winning.

Generally, School Sports Days are enjoyed by families, pupils and teachers alike and encourage good sportsmanship and the values of taking part.

If you are attending School Sports Day during this lovely warm summer weather, don’t forget the sun cream!
